A Polliniferous project  & Pollinating Ideas
Human Energy Becomes Public Light

Pollinating Ideas (Polliniferous project) is a community art project about channeling human energy and ideas in support of the future of our environment. Pollinating Ideas addresses the potential of people not only to consume energy and ideas, but to generate them.

How does it work. Runners or walkers obtain a special relay stick (baton) which they hold during their exercise. The internal mechanism of this stick converts movement into electricity. Subsequently, the energy in the stick is transferred to the tree installation and shown as public light. The required energy for powering and illuminating the installation is complemented by solar panels, blending human and solar energy. For many it is an artistic and fun way to be engaged with the challenges our world is confronted with, like climate change.

Pollinating Ideas is  a community art project for the people of Amsterdam . Are you a runner and curious about the origin of ideas? Do you live in Amsterdam East? Than you can also request a special running stick that will convert your kinetic  energy (movements of your arms during running)  into electricity and discuss ideas on sustainability with us. Use Google Translate, for example, to guide you through the Dutch pages of our website.

We would like to share our experience gained during the development of this project to promote and enable other communities to develop a similar project. Contact us for more information at: Dit e-mailadres is beschermd tegen spambots. U heeft Javascript nodig om het te kunnen zien.

Pollinating Ideas refers to the process of pollination, in which biological form, i.e. ideas about plants which are carried by pollen, travel through time and space to find new opportunities to manifest themselves. Stuifmeel Ideeën promotes the generation of ideas about sustainability and then helps mature these ideas into tangible projects in Amsterdam East. The project investigates the relationship between movement, energy and creativity in a playful manner. Many people read or talk about sustainability; but all too few are really engaged in doing things about it. Stuifmeel Ideeën relates to the Do It Yourself concept that encourages people to build, modify and repair things themselves, regardless of whether they make mistakes in the process

We assume that running has positive impact on our creativity. That movement and rhythm affect our consciousness. William Shakespeare described it nicely when he wrote in the play Julius Caesar:  "Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible." There are interesting scientific statements on running and brain activity. Click here for a recent publication and have a look at the TED presentation by Jill Bolte about the human brain.

We provide a number of "tools" for you to help generate and visualize creative ideas on sustainability, including a running staff that converts kinetic energy into electricity, this website and a fantasy tree (installation) in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam East. The electricity generated by the running staff can be transferred to the fantasy tree (installation), which on its turn will light.

Stuifmeel Ideeën also demonstrates in a simple way how people and their energy may be connected. The running staff helps us to pool energy from different people and visualize it as light. The project reflects the African saying: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” The total distance covered by participants within the project will be used to plot a virtual journey through various places on the world-map, allowing us to discover inspiring stories that relate in direct or indirect ways to sustainability.
